About
Cave Urban is a family of architects, artists, designers and volunteers that work together to make and create across many different realms of practice and disciplines. Our work is driven by a core desire to utilise local, recycled, and natural materials, provide a platform for community engagement and education, and employ the design and making process as a means of open-source research and development. Our work spans art and architecture, retail and residential, interiors and lighting design, landscape design, playgrounds, treehouses, public sculptures, and festivals.

Nici Long - Founder | Director
Nici Long has been an architectural designer for 25 years and is the founder of Cave Urban, a collective dedicated to the study, design and practical application of passive sustainable systems for living. Key areas of interest include sustainable house design, renewable energy systems, resource recycling and the use of bamboo as a low-energy, renewable structural building material.
Angel Heredia - Architectural Designer
Angel Heredia is an architect graduate from the Catelonian Polytechnic University in Barcelona. He has been collaborating in a variety of architectural practices in both Barcelona and Sydney for the past 15 years. He has been working with Nici Long for the last 5 years.
Isabel Rouch - Interior Architecture and Lighting
Juan-Pablo - Co-Founder | Creative Director
Chilean architect and sculptor Juan Pablo was born in Santiago in 1978. He studied Architecture at the University of Chile and holds a Masters in Sustainable Design from The University of Sydney, founded by the Chilean Government through the Becas Chile Scholarship program. Co-Founder of international collective Cave Urban, he started carrying out research in bamboo structures and vernacular architecture in 2011 He participated in a series of bamboo workshops and cross-cultural exchanges in Thailand, Taiwan and Portugal. Throughout his career Pinto has had a close involvement with large scale installations and public sculpture. His work encompasses a wide spectrum of materials; from the traditional - steel and bronze, to the ephemeral - bamboo, ice and snow. He has represented Chile in several snow and ice sculpting competitions around the world including competitions held in China, Japan, Argentina and Canada.
Mercurio Alvarado - Architectural Designer
Mercurio Alvarado has enriched his knowledge and experience by using conventional materials such as concrete and steel as well as alternative and sustainable materials such as bamboo and adobe. His architectural vision has been strongly influenced by his country of origin Mexico. Form, function, colour and natural materials underpin his career.
Maeve Corke Butters - Architectural Associate
Jed Long - Co-Founder | Project Director
Jed Long studied Architecture at the University of New South Wales. Prior to joining Cave Urban, Jed spent several years working at PTW architects gaining experience on large scale urban projects. Jed has developed his passion for sustainable design through a series of workshops and cross-cultural exchanges in Thailand, China, Japan and Portugal. Jed views education and community engagement as a means to empower and inspire others to step beyond conventional architectural ideals.
Lachlan Brown - Creative Associate
Freelance journalist, Lachlan Brown has worked as a reporter, sub-editor and freelance writer for numerous newspapers and magazines since 1981.
He moved to Brisbane in 2010 where he has worked on two Cave Urban bamboo geodesic installations and the creation of the Pineapple Lounge music venue at the Woodford Folk Festival.
